Pendelfin Rabbits-50 Years of Lancashire Stoneware Magic

Pendelfin Rabbits-50 Years of Lancashire Stoneware Magic

Pendelfin was born in 1953, in the shadow of the "Witch" Pendle hill near Burnley in Lancashire, in the north of England. It started out as little more than a hobby for Jean Walmsley Heap (J.W.H) and Jeannie Todd, working from a wooden hut in Jeannie's back garden. But this hobby soon became an obsession and a successful business as the family grew and grew Pendelfin.

The Pendle Witch

The very first PenDelfin piece was modelled on the Pendle Witch and took the form of a moulded wall plaque. This was followed by The Fairy Shop, a large 3-dimensional wall plaque based on an original painting by J.W.H.

Witches continued to be a popular theme, with more witch-based models being produced, including the Cauldron Witch, the Pixie House and on acompletely different theme, the famous little Thrifty, modelled at the request of J.W.H's part-time employers, the Burnley Building Society.

The Rabbit Revolution

In 1956, a small family of rabbits were modelled for the first time. This proved to be a turning point for PenDelfin as the first batch of rabbits sold out almost instantly. Repeat orders started to pour in, and attention started to focus almost exclusively on producing PenDelfin's trademark rabbit models, all with a carefully thought out character and history!

A band of musically-inclined rabbits, rabbit bookends, uncles, aunts and of course the original Father and Mother rabbits all followed, as well as many other lively young characters and several large and lovingly modelled standsto provide a backdrop to the PenDelfin village, as it became.

PenDelfin Expands-A Larger Factory for a Global Market

PenDelfin continued to expand, and although it had its trials and tribulations, by the 1970s was a well established company in Burnley, occupying a large part of a former mill building and dispatching members of the PenDelfin family to enthusiastic collectors all over the world.

In 1992 the PenDelfin Collectors Club was founded, with "Family Circle" pieces produced each year for club members only-some of which have become quite sought after today.

The End?

Book Sculpting

Book Sculpting

Book sculpting is the art of transforming a book into a work of art. While destroying the literary value is uncomfortable for some, the visual impact of the ensuing artwork is ultimately worthwhile of the sacrifice. The amount of time and effort involved will determine how detailed the work is. However, book sculptures vary from simple to extremely detailed. Powerful visual imagery may be achieved either way. There are several ways to book sculpting can be accomplished.

Hardcover books are a good choice of medium, and the choice of many artists who work in this medium. This might be because of both their sturdiness, and overall perceived better quality than paperback books. A hardcover book also provides its own solid structure for creating a book sculpture that either standson its own or hangs on the wall.

Ideas and inspiration for creating a book sculpture should be found from the title of the book, a theme, or idea of the book, or even the cover design. This will help the viewer make a connection between the literature and the arts. For example, book sculpture I am in the process of creating is of a bottle being tossed around the ocean. The title of The book is "Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks.

Techniques vary with each sculpture, although I try to maintain the integrity of the medium by creating the sculpture almost entirely out of the book. Starting with a sharp box or exacto-knife, remove just the center out of several book pages. These pages can then be rolled, folded, or attached, shredded, pulped, or otherwise manipulated inwhatever way you need to create your design idea. The pages are either now your basic or armor, for a more detailed design, or a complete design on their own. If you choose to cover your armor, you can be choosy about the text that your audience sees on the sculpture. For instance, on the bottle for Message in a Bottle, the text that I used was the message in the bottle from the story. This provides another artistic connection to the literature. Most sculptures are usually always attached to the book itself, rather than discarding the book and using just the pages.

Some book artists choose simply to remove content from the books, and part of the cover, so the images that remain created the sculpture. Some artists create abstract representations. Books also can be attachedtogether, and they can be carved using a saw or carving tool. Imagination and creativity determine the techniques involved.

Book sculptures are unique additions to bookshelves, sofa tables, and libraries. They are easy conversation starters, and every piece tells a story.
